Alicante

This region is located on the eastern coast of Spain and is part of the Cost Blanca, wedged between Murcia in the south and Valencia in the north. It is the capital of the Costa Blanca.
Its history reaches back to prehistoric times, with remains being found here from the 3rd century BC.
Today, Alicante is a first rate tourist centre thanks to its splendid beaches, excellent climate and well known facilities. It is one of the most important tourist destinations on the Spanish east coast. From your holiday villa rental in Alicante you can discover mountains, castles, forests and many other areas of natural beauty.

Activities

Alicante and the surrounding Valencian region has become famous for its beautiful Costa Blanca beaches and with its warm climate, this province makes an excellent place for sports and outdoor recreation.

Watersports, horse riding, paintballing, paragliding and cycling are just a few of the activities available in this area. There is the Terra Mitica theme park where thousands of years of history have been converted into hours of fun emotion and adrenaline. Added to this are many Nature, Safari and water parks with fun and excitement to suit all ages.

For golf lovers, there are many excellent golf courses in the beautiful province of Alicante - approximately fifteen in total. The most popular golf courses are in and around Torrevieja which has four 18 hole golf courses. Villamartin, the most well known golf club in the area, hosted The Mediterranean Open. Las Ramblas golf course, Campoamor golf club and La Finca golf club are also very popular. It’s possible to rent a self catering villa or apartment either overlooking a golf course or within walking distance, so you can play as much golf as you wish.

Festivals

St John’s Day Bonfires, which has gained international recognition and takes place in Alicante City, is a dancing, merry making and fireworks event to celebrate the arrival of the summer solstice. The Moors and Christians Festival in Alcoy is an age old tradition that takes you back to the 10th century to celebrate the Battle of Alcoy. As there are numerous festivals and carnivals throughout the province, you are bound to find one taking place not too far from your holiday home, whichever location you choose.

Cuisine

The famous Mediterranean diet has made its stamp firmly on the cuisine of Alicante. It is characterised by the use of local produce, guaranteeing a freshness and quality recognised worldwide. Fish is served within hours of capture, while meat and cured sausages are produced in the nearby mountains. Rice however, is undoubtedly the King of Alicante’s cuisine and is cooked in at least a hundred different ways in delicious and mouth watering recipes, including the Paella. The province’s numerous restaurants aim to put at least one different rice dish on each day’s menu.

In latter years Alicante has been winning respect for its new light fresh wines and interesting reds produced by pioneering Bodegas. Alongside the new red wines emerging here, Alicante’s classic dessert wine, Fondillon has been exported for centuries and is enjoying a renaissance.

Towns

The City of Alicante is well worth a visit and has a wealth of historic sites, museums and beautiful churches; the most outstanding site being the imposing Santa Barbara Castle from where you can have a wonderful view of the city. Then there is a long sea front promenade to enjoy after a day of sightseeing. In this city and its surrounding area there is a wide variety of self catering holiday rentals to suit all budgets.

El Campello is a town 12 km north of Alicante resting on a small mountain from where you can see 23 km of beaches. Its characteristic monument is a lighthouse constructed in 1554. In this area there are also many archaeological sites from the Greek period. The main beach is Muchavista, with little coves further along which are also perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

Benidorm is located just 42 km up the coast to the north and it is the best known tourist town on the Mediterranean. The excellent beaches of Levante and Poinente, the cafes, bars and clubs and the great Terra Mitica Theme Park will guarantee a lot of fun. There is plenty of good quality villa rentals and holiday apartments in this area.

Calpe lies further up north in the shadow of the Penon de Ifac. The charming towns of Javea and Denia are worth a visit for the beauty of their old town centres and their splendid beaches.
Towards the south, there are extensive sandy areas and alongside Santa Pola beach, the Guardamar dunes and pine forest will lead you to Torrevieja -a bustling tourist centre in the south of the Province.

Guadalest is a typical town set in a dream-like landscape. Take the route of the castles and visit La Mola Castle in Novelda, or the La Atalya Castle in Villena.

Historic Orihuela is home to the beautiful gothic Cathedral of El Salvador, many museums and historical monuments are worthy of a visit, as are the palm forests of Elche.
