Description inside property: Casa del Rio Cavo is divided into 2 separate apartments. The upstairs apartment has its own entrance and pretty covered terrace. Inside there is small landing off which opens two bedrooms (one double, one twin), bathroom, and living room / kitchen (with hob only). The whole place has been newly restored to a high standard with local chestnut wood and terracotta floor tiling throughout. The ground-level apartment (with wood-burning fireplace) is equally attractive. Guests walk straight into the living room / kitchen (with hob only). Leading through are the 2 bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin) and the bathroom. Here the original chestnut wood ceilings are beautifully restored to give a feeling of timelessness. Visitors can either rent one of the apartments on its own, or rent both together if they are going as a larger group or as 2 families.
To ensure privacy the apartments are never rented separately.
Description outside property: Outside the enclosed garden is for the private use of visitors. Here loungers and table and benches for outdoor eating are set out on the lawn. There is also a vine covered pergola for summer shade. The owners have made a pathway down to the stream where children can paddle, build dams etc. They are busy working people who live in the house adjacent to the property. They put themselves out to ensure that visitors have the best possible holiday. The wife Barbara cooks on request at very reasonable prices. She also offers a baby-sitting service for visitors who come with children.

Description of local area and activities: Rio Cavo and the nearby village of Camporgiano lie at the heart of the Garfagnana, the mountainous part of Tuscany where a genuinely rural culture is still alive and well. It is an area of small villages, peasant cultivated fields and alpine mountain meadows rich in fauna and flora and where shepherds guard their flocks of long legged sheep. In the autumn the locals go into the woods to find porcini mushrooms and sweet chestnuts which are brought back and roasted over the fire. Camporgiano, 4kms away, has a 15th century castle in the middle of the village.
Eating: Restaurants nearby Fishing: Fly fishing in river. Rods provided Culture: Museums, churches, ancient forts, local festivals Walking: Excellent
Music: Guitar provided Distances: Lucca 58kms, Florence 125kms, Pisa 78kms.

|
| Notes: Casa del Rio Cavo is well placed for visitors who enjoy rural pursuits – walking, fishing, dipping in the river, looking for wild flowers and exploring the ancient villages and pathways locally. The private garden and facilities mean that it is also great for relaxing, reading etc. Being near the road, the cottage has the advantage of accessibility so that trips to other areas of North West Tuscany such as Castelnuovo, Barga and Lucca are available. Also accessible in the other direction, are the coastal fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, best reached by train. The station at Camporgiano is 4kms away (the little local train runs along the arched stone viaduct behind the cottage) making the cottage possible for visitors who want to manage without a car. The owner is happy to meet visitors at the station on arrival and departure. |
