Description of facilities: A high chair and cot are provided on request
Description inside property: When the owners of Casa Valeria reached retirement age and moved to a modern apartment, they decided to leave the house as it was, full of personal mementos, a family home of books and pictures along with memories of children running up and down the stairs and games of hide and seek. 'We were amazed and delighted by our stay here in this wonderful place ... this holiday has been magical' as one holiday-maker, who stayed 3 years running, wrote.
Visitors step into the entrance with, on the right, a newly furbished, small, tiled, traditional kitchen. Down a couple of steps comes a long family living / dining room with a corner fireplace, some nice pieces of furniture and a view across the wooded slopes of the hills beyond. Off the far end is a well equipped laundry room, while up another couple of steps to the right comes a shower room and toilet. On from here is a second sitting room, filled with books and pictures and again, a view across wooded slopes to the medieval village of Granaiolo perched on the top of the hill. The second shower room and toilet is off a narrow entrance to the back of the sitting room.
Immediately upstairs is a large children’s bedroom with 3 single beds (a fourth one can be pulled out when required). A third sitting area comes over the other side of the stairs. It has a wood burning stove and a view from the window down towards the village below. Off this sitting area, to the back are 2 pretty bedrooms, both with double beds, although one of these can be separated to form twin beds if required. In front of the house there is space for catching the morning sun (great for breakfast) while over the track, a long narrow lawn gives plenty of space for eating out and lounging.

Description of local area and activities: Casa Valeria, together with the quite separate Casa Valeria Piccola next door, sits on a ridge above Bagni di Lucca, a small valley town divided by the River Lima which tumbles down into the waters of the Serchio. Here elegant villas, a theatre, assembly rooms and the first casino in Europe, testify to the life of a spa town that came into its own during the 18th Century. Lovers of literature will know that Byron and Shelley stayed here. Indeed the historic British link is strong with Bagni di Lucca being a stopping point on the grand tour of Europe enjoyed by minor aristocracy, clergymen and classical scholars. Today, its charm and facilities give it a pleasant bustle of tourism while always maintaining its authenticity.
The pleasant atmosphere of Casa Valeria suggests a holiday divided between relaxation (reading, painting, lounging) and activity. Also the structure of the house makes it ideal for a mixed group all of whom may want to do different things. All facilities, including buses, are a short walk downhill (steep coming back though!) Other areas of North West Tuscany are within reach, either by train (the station is a short drive away) or by road. The medieval city of Lucca is 25 mins drive away. Visitors have reported back that they enjoyed staying here using only public transport and the occasional taxi.
Eating: Restaurants, bars and pasticcerie nearby (walking distance) Swimming: Local swimming pool 5 mins walk away down track Culture: Theatre and concerts Walking: Good – on tracks and lanes direct from house Spa: Thermal Baths a walk away, a full range of treatments provided Distances: Lucca 37kms, Florence 104kms, Pisa 57kms.
