Additional Information

Description of local area and activities: Just four hours by car from Paris, Limousin is a world away from crowds and tourism, remaining one of France’s best-kept secrets. With its unspoilt countryside and ample lakes, it’s a wonderful location for outdoor pursuits.

The region is made up of three departments - Creuse to the east, Haute Vienne to the west and Corrèze to the south.

Situated on the edge of the Creuse and Haute Vienne, Montayaud forms part of the commune of St Junien la Brégère, located on the D940 between the towns of Bourganeuf and Peyrat-le-Chateau. Both towns are about five miles away and have a range of amenities including boulangeries, boucheries, supermarkets, pharmacies, banks and post offices.

The area’s greatest attraction is undoubtedly Lac de Vassivière, about 20 minutes away by car from the cottage. At 1,100 hectares and with about 30 miles of sandy beaches, Vassivière is one of the largest lakes in France ands is an ideal place for fishing, water sports, walking, bird-watching, cycling or simply relaxing. It also has a gallery of modern art, the National Centre of Art. The smaller lake of St Hélène is also nearby.

Limousin was at the heart of the French resistance during the second world war. In nearby Peyrat-le-Chateau is the Musée de la Resistance, whilst further afield near Limoges airport is the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, left untouched as a permanent memorial following the massacre of its 642 inhabitants in 1944.

For those into arts and crafts, you can watch tapestries and custom-made carpets being produced at the Musée Departmental de la Tapisserie at Aubusson. Limoges itself is renowned for porcelain and enamel - to sample the wares, head to the Bernardaud porcelain factory. The Musée National Adrien-Dubouche charts the
history of enamel from early Greek and Chinese works to the present day.

If you want to get lost for the afternoon, try the Le Labyrinthe, the world’s largest maze at Gueret, which also has picnic areas and a giant chess board.

The pretty medieval town of St Leonard de Noblat, which is about half way between Limoges from Montayaud, makes for a pleasant afternoon out, as does the busier town of Eymoutiers to the south, from where you can take the train into Limoges.

Leisure Activities - Golf

Notes: There are several golf courses in the area, the nearest being in Bourganeuf, with a wonderful panoramic view, plus one at Lac de Vassiviere.

Leisure Activities - Special Interests

Notes: The Creuse will appeal especially to those who are fond of outdoor activities, especially walking, fishing and watersports.

There is also a tennis court for hire in St Junien la Bregere.
