Isla Canela

Isla Canela is a beautiful resort in the province of Huelva Andalucia and is located on the north western coast of the Atlantic. There is a large choice of holiday villas and apartments in Isla Canela on Rent Property Direct which can be rented directly from the owners or property managers. Being so close to the Portuguese border it shares many aspects of both Spain and Portugal. The island has 7 kilometres of fine golden sandy beaches and dunes. Isla Canela is served by the airports of Faro and Seville and the island is linked to the town of Ayamonte by a road bridge. The island has a very agreeable climate with 12 hours per day of sunshine during the summer months. One of the major advantages of the island is its excellent golf course with easy accessibility from your holiday rental.

Places of Interest

The Shrine of San Sebastian dates back to 1550 and is located in the La Villa quarter of the island. It is used as a study of nature and culture following much restoration.

Church of La Merced The convent and church were founded in 1640 and takes the shape of a quadrilateral. The altarpiece is baroque and was constructed during the 17th century.

The Marina This perfectly sheltered, modern and fully equipped marina was opened just a few years ago and has full amenities for yachting as well as boat maintenance. It is perfectly situated for sailing excursions round the Iberian Peninsula. Take a stroll from your holiday home along the charming quayside where you will find shops, restaurants and cafes. Across the bay you have the fishing village of Punta del Moral where you can watch the fishermen return each evening with their catch, which will find its way onto the tables of the many good restaurants to be found on the island. This rustic and charming little village has some excellent fish restaurants where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch in relaxing surroundings.

For bird watchers, the Donana National Park with its wonderful bird sanctuary is well worth a visit and is just one of many such sanctuaries in this area. There is a licenced professional bird tour guide of the best sites.

Activities

The island is simply a paradise for golf lovers who don’t want to travel too far from their holiday rental villa to enjoy their favourite sport. The Isla Canela Golf Course at Ayamonte is beautifully situated and lies within a natural reserve where the river Guardiana meets the ocean. It is surrounded by olive and orange groves with exotic palms offering their welcoming shade. The wonderful all-year-round climate and this beautiful location makes it the perfect golfing destination. The course is very comfortable to walk and has 18 holes and par 72 with wide fairways running between trees and natural dunes. The club has it’s own swimming pool and excellent restaurant and terrace bar where you can enjoy a post round refreshment. If you are planning to play a lot of golf on your holiday, it would make sense to rent a villa rental or an apartment rental on or near a golf course.

Also accessible from your holiday rental villa are two more excellent golf courses on the banks of the Guardiana at Costa Esturi. For those who want to take the short drive to nearby Faro in Portugal, the options are endless, with top class courses among stunning scenery; Salgados Golf Course, The Royal Golf Course and Quinta do Logo. All these courses offer the golfer and non golfing members of your group many complimentary facilities to while away their time in these stunning surroundings. Apart from the many beautiful Algarve beaches, there are excellent restaurants, shops, bars and cafes and of course plenty of places of interest to visit whilst in the locality.

Apart from soaking up the sun on the spectacular sandy beaches or golfing, there are many other activities on the island such as swimming, fishing and sailing. If you tire of swimming and sunbathing, the island is blessed with numerous scenic walks for you to try. Most visitors to the island enjoy the opportunity to visit nearby resorts and there are many excursions to facilitate this. With Faro also being nearby, you may wish to take a day trip from your holiday rental villa and enjoy the friendly hospitality of neighbouring Portugal and go shopping or sightseeing. Boats run on a regular basis to the mainland. For those who prefer history, you can drive to Huelva which has a multitude of interesting sites to explore or you may wish to drive into Historical Seville for further sightseeing and brilliant shopping.

For those who prefer a truly laid back and leisurely holiday without crowds, your villa rental on the island provides all the ingredients, leaving out the necessity to travel should you so wish.

Festivals and Carnivals

There are numerous wonderful festivals and carnivals throughout the year which take place on either the island or its neighbouring town of Ayamonte; The Festival of Virgin del Carmen on the island, Ayamonte Music Festival and the Bonfires of San Juan being the most popular among a long list.

Cuisine

Whether you decide to dine in the comfort of your holiday home or eat out, you will enjoy the fresh and varied ingredients of the Huelva Province at its best. Huelva’s cuisine includes freshly caught seafood, such as sardines, tuna and shell fish. The fish is either cooked on the grill, fried or made into mouthwatering stews. High quality succulent Atlantic cured ham, Iberian sausages cured with paprika and an excellent goat’s cheese are also used in the many and varied dishes particular to the province.

There are many delicious pastries to sample, some with a distinctly Arab influence, combining the excellent mountain honey and almonds from the coast. There are other mouthwatering treats such as the Bonares Easter Cake from nearby Ayamonte. You can enjoy excellent food in the restaurants around the marina, or if you prefer more variety and a livelier atmosphere, nearby picturesque Ayamonte offers a wider choice, with restaurants serving dishes from around the world, including some British fare, which is always a firm favourite with young children especially. Huelva Province offers some excellent young fruity wines alongside the more popular full bodied variety and you will find these widely available in all the restaurants.

From the tranquility of the terrace or balcony of your holiday rental, enjoy one of the exquisite morello cherry liquers to round off your days on this little piece of paradise that is Isla Canela.
