Description inside property: La Grange du Verger is a stunning, traditional French barn located on the edge of the Brenne National Park, an area famed for it's natural beauty and abundant wildlife. The barn is over 300 years old and constructed from natural materials. Up until a few years ago, La Grange du Verger was still a well used agricultural building containing feeding troughs and stalls used in livestock farming of Limousin cattle.
Bob and Gill Higgs bought the property in January 2004 and since then, have tastefully converted the barn into a superb holiday home.
The entrance hallway of La Grange du Verger leads into a spacious, fully equipped kitchen with oven and grill, microwave, fridge with ice box, toaster, kettle, coffee maker and dishwasher. There is sufficient cutlery and crockery for up to 8 people. A large archway leads into a huge reception room fronted by the magnificent oak and glass barn doors which bathe the room in beautiful golden sunlight on a clear day. The room is open right up to the roof with the huge, original oak beams clearly visible. The room contains a dining table and chairs for up to 8 people and comfortable armchairs make this room an ideal location for reading, relaxing and just simply spending the time of day. An oak stable door at the back of the room leads out on to the patio and the rear garden. A highchair is also provided for babies and younger children. From this room, glazed doors lead in to the beautiful, extensive lounge room. Once the shutters are closed for the evening, this room is the perfect space to enjoy a glass of French wine. The lounge has been created in a traditional French, country style with the focal point of the room being the impressive, large inglenook fireplace with antique wood-burning stove. During the colder months, a specialty of this region is to warm red wine on the hot plate of a roaring, cast iron stove. The lounge at La Grange du Verger is the perfect place to unwind after the day's activities with ample comfortable seating and a table and chairs at the rear of the room. The lounge also contains a television with digital satellite receiver picking up English channels and a DVD player. The upstairs rooms are accessed from the oak staircase leading from the large reception/dining room leading up to a balcony landing overlooking the reception/dining room. 3 large bedrooms (2 with twin beds, 1 double) are located on the first floor and a further bedroom is located on a mezzanine level in the roof. The first floor also has a family bathroom with bath, shower, toilet and sink. The double bedroom has an on suite bathroom with toilet, basin and shower and a further toilet room is located in one of the other twin bedrooms. All bedrooms have adequate storage space and comfortable beds with all bed linen supplied. A cot is also provided. The huge garden surrounding the rear and side of La Grange du Verger consists of a partially covered, tiled patio and a large lawned area flanked by a variety of mature trees and shrubs. Several fruit bearing trees grow in the garden giving fruit including delightful, juicy eating apples, cooking apples, dates, olives, walnuts and cherries. The location of La Grange du Verger provides a calm, peaceful and relaxing environment to simply sit back and enjoy the wonderful surroundings that this area has to offer. Patio furniture and a barbeque with utensils are all provided in order to make the best use of this beautiful open space.

For those who enjoy a more action packed adventure, the Lac d'Eguzon provides all the distractions you could wish for. There are many outdoor activities centres positioned around the 770 acre lake which offer a wide variety of outdoor activities. These excellent facilities provide equipment and tuition for a range of aquatic and terrestrial sports including water skiing, sailing, windsurfing, diving, fishing (local permits required) pedalos, rowing, canoeing/kayaking, hiking, cycling, horse-riding, climbing, caving, golf etc. The lake also boasts beautiful sandy beaches with qualified lifeguard supervision during the summer season making a truly enjoyable experience for families. Within the local area there is access to a large variety of activities: Swimming, sailing, water-skiing, fishing tennis, horse riding etc. and within a short drive you will find yourself amongst various famous sites such as the home of George Sands, Creuse Valley, the Natural Park of Brenne, Valency and Loire Valley Castle.
The southern end of the lake provides suberb walking through the gorge at Crozant. Signposted walks allow ramblers of all ages to experience some of the most stunning countryside views this region has to offer. Views of charming and peaceful landscapes with lively rivers among granite rocks and transparent, cool lakes have long been inspiration for artists and writers.
Eguzon is situated on the edge of the Brenne Parc Naturel régional (similar to a British National Park). This 620 square mile area is one of France's most important wetland areas with a vast biological diversity. This results in a spectacular abundance of flora and fauna thriving in a mosaic of different types of habitat including wetland, forest, heath and meadow. The Brenne Parc Naturel régional is perhaps best known for it's vast number of bird species including Purple heron, Black-necked grebe, wetland warblers, Bittern, Marsh harrier, Whiskered tern, Short-toed eagle to name but a few. There are also many species of duck to be found on the lakes.
This bird-watchers paradise boasts, from within the garden of La Grange du Verger itself: Hawfinch, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Firecrest, Short Toed Tree Creeper and Buzzards. During the winter months, there is the opportunity to see the spectacular view of Cranes flying directly over the Barn. The area around La Grange du Verger has many attractions for days out ranging from long, scenic walks in breathtaking countryside branching in every direction from the barn to trips to some of the nearby tourist attractions. The nearby town of Argenton sur Creuse is a 15 minute drive away. Argenton is a picturesque medieval town with a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants. This town of important archaeological significance has long been popular with artists and photographers thanks to it's Gallo-Roman architecture and ancient buildings which hang precariously over the River Creuse. There are many other places of interest within a short distance from La Grange du Verger. A selection of tourist brochures and a guest information pack containing details of recommended trips can be found in the stationary holder in the kitchen of the barn. |
