Description of Local Area and Activities: Ideally situated for exploring the region of Provence, with the fortified papal city of Avignon just twenty minutes to the north; Arles and the natural wilderness of the Camargue to the south-west, Marseilles and the beauty of the Callanques to the south-east and the spectacular valley of the Luberon where Peter Mayle lived and wrote his famous novel “A Year in Provence”, and the films "Jean de Florette" and "Manon des Sources" were shot, to the east.
Also close by is the magnificent village of Les Baux de Provence perched up in the Alpilles, the fashionable town of Aix en Provence, the Roman aqueduct at Pont du Gard dating back to the first century AD and (for the antiques-hunters!) the town of Isle sue la Sourge, famous for its 300+ antique shops and weekly fairs.
The house is set at the foot of the Alpilles and just three kilometres outside St. Rémy de Provence, an historic market town built on one of the oldest archaeological sites in Europe. You can roam amongst the Roman remains of "Glanum" which was founded in the 3rd century BC, and visit the "grands Thermes", the Triumphal Arch, the Temple and the Mausoleum of a true gallo-roman city.
The beauty of the countryside and the quality of light have inspired many artists, writers and painters over the centuries. Without a doubt, the most famous being Vincent Van Gogh who produced more than 150 paintings of the countryside surrounding Saint Rémy de Provence. It is also the birthplace of Nostradamus.
The area also offers a wide range of activities including golf (courses in nearby Les Baux de Provence, Avignon, Mories, Mallemort and Nimes), gliding (5-minutes drive from the house at Romanin), horse riding (closest centre in St. Remy), hiking, cycling, canoeing, hot air ballooning and climbing.
And it is, of course, perfect for simply relaxing, enjoying the sunshine and sampling the wonderful Provencal food and wines.
