Additional Information

Description of facilities: The owners are more than happy to let the guests borrow from their library of books, CD's, DVD's and games.
Games available include Settlers (Catan - with full expansions), Valley of the Mammoths, Ra, Alhambra, Carcassonne, and old favourites like Monopoly (also Star Trek version!).

Description inside property: Nestled into the tranquil landscape, La Porcherie is a new high-quality gite offering holiday accommodation for up to four people, in the hamlet of Villemonteix, which is at the gateway to the Monts et Barrages, and the Millevaches Regional Park, in Limousin.
Recently renovated to a very high standard, the building (which used to house both a piggery and a bread oven) has kept all the character one would expect in a building of this nature (but the pigs have been evicted!). Wood beams and original stonewalls are mixed with the comfort of modern conveniences and the gite provides a comfortable retreat from the pressures of modern life.
Although there are steps to the entrance, once inside all the accommodation is on one level.
If you are looking for a relaxing laid-back break or a more energetic holiday, the gite is the perfect hide-away from which to explore this beautiful and relatively undiscovered part of France.
The accommodation comprises one bedroom (double bed) with radio/CD player, bathroom (with a large shower cabin), and an open-plan sitting-room/kitchen. A comfortable sofa-bed (double) provides the sleeping arrangement for the third and fourth guestsshould you wish. The kitchen is fitted with a quality cooker, microwave and washing machine. A TV/DVD is provided (with a selection of DVDs) and access to the owners’ book library is given for the duration of your stay.
The gite is available for rent all year, and if you come and experience the Limousin in low or mid-season we can assure your warmth and comfort. The bathroom is equipped with an electric heater that fills the room with warm air in a very short time. The main body of the gite is heated by means of a wood burner in the sitting room. A daily allowance of wood is included in the tariff during the appropriate seasons.
A small private garden area with terrace, seating and barbeque is situated to benefit from daylong sunshine and is the perfect spot to relax before taking a dip in the ‘above-ground’ swimming pool (24 x 12 foot).
The overall property is set in a private garden of over an acre and includes a small organic garden, and produce will be available to you depending on the season. Our corn-fed chickens will be happy to provide your breakfast eggs - as long as they are laying!

Description outside property: The terrace is situated at the end of the gite and enjoys full sun for most of the day, and is a great place to relax before taking a dip in the adjacent pool, or firing up the barbeque. There is a small lawned area ideal for the sun beds.

Description of eco friendly facilities: With lots of insulation in the roof, and double-glazed windows we have reduced heatloss as much as one can in an old stone building. We also recycle vegetable waste in our compost bin, and have low water use toilets. Apart from the bathroom, heating is by wood burning stove only - both efficient and eco-friendly!

Additional Information

Description of local area and activities: The Haute-Vienne is a region of beauty and tranquillity. From pasture land and forests to magnificent lakes and rivers there is little that the region does not offer in the way of places to relax or to experience something a little more energetic!

The landscape lends itself naturally to many 'countryside' pastimes - horse riding, hiking, mushroom hunting (in season), and mountain biking. Water sports abound in this region, which after all is rightly known as the lake district of France!

Only five minutes drive away is Lac de St Helene where you will find a small well kept beach from which to swim in safety under the watchful gaze of a lifeguard (times of cover posted at the beach). A separate area of the lake is dedicated to water-skiing. There is a restaurant overlooking the lake and it is a great place to eat and watch the sunset!

Lac de Vassiviere (40 mins) offers beaches, swimming, canoeing, and water skiing, and there is an island in the middle with a chateau with gardens housing a small menagerie of llamas and donkeys. There is also an exhibition centre which hosts art shows throughout the year.

History lovers will find much of interest - the countryside is dotted with antiquities from dolmens to castles, manors, abbeys and churches (11th C onwards). The local medieval town of St Leonard is on the pilgrimage route to Compostella and the emblematic shell of St Jaques can be found set into the roads and pavements of its streets.

In Limoges you will find a host of attractions - museums (porcelain, enamels, the Resistance, and general), porcelain factories, a daily (morning) covered market, shopping, the cathedral and other churches, gardens, an aquarium, bowling, golf, restaurants... the list goes on!

A new Zenith concert hall in Limoges gives the opportunity to tie in your visit to catch a wide range of artists from Deep Purple and Motorhead to Holiday on Ice and Riverdance! Alternatively if you're looking for local bands then we recommend Camping Cheyenne at nearby Chateauneuf-le-Foret.

A most compelling and moving experience is a visit to Oradur-sur-Glane. Here virtually the entire town was massacred by the German troops in just one day in June 1944 - the remnants of the village have been left as a reminder, and a memorial has been built, along with a visitors centre which holds many artifacts from the old town and where you can see photographs and films which tell the story of the victims and the handful of survivors.

Villemonteix is at the gateway to the Monts and Barrages Natural Park, and so a visit to the Plateau de Millevaches and the volcanic region of the Massif Central is a must. The skiing region of Mont Dore, Besse and Superbesse is approximately a two-hour drive and is more than worth a visit even out of skiing season.
