Description inside property: If you contact us we'd be most happy to send you a brochure and photo disc showing more pictures of the house and this beautiful area in south west France.
Built in 1648 this Little Gem was completely rennovated in 1995. Le Petit Bijou is a lovely townhouse that sits directly on the River Salies and the soothing sound of rushing water is ever present from within. The house consists of 3 floors. On the ground floor as you enter the house you'll find a summer kitchen. This is a cool place to escape on those hot summer nights in the south of France. In the summer kitchen there is a double sink, a large stone table and a barbeque grill. Please note: Because Le Petit Bijou is directly next to the river Saley's there are certain times of the year when the summer kitchen floods. The over 350 year old structure was built to withstand flooding but the summer kitchen is occasionally unavailable. If you have concerns please let us know. The weather is beyond our control so please accept our apologies in advance if this occurs. On the first floor (2nd USA) you'll find a hall with cupboards, a shower room equipped with extra large shower stall, toilet, bidet and sink. Off the hallway is the bedroom with double bed. After a short climb up a staircase you'll come to the living area. At one end of the top floor you'll find another small shower room with toilet, a kitchen and a good sized balcony overlooking the river. The kitchen is equipped with a stove top, double sink, dishwasher, microwave/grill, toaster, coffee maker, espresso maker, kettle, and all pots/pans, crockery, glasses and utensils. There is a granite counter top with two bar stools. Between the kitchen and the living room area is a fold out table that easily accomodates 4 people. In the living area there is a comfortable futon with a high quality matress, a leather arm chair and foot stool, a coffee table, end tables and lamps. You'll find a DVD player and television with satellite dish which picks up several BBC television stations. You will then come to a spacious balcony with bistro table and chairs for two. This is a wonderful place to relax and watch the world go by. For more information about Le Petit Bijou or beautiful Salies de Béarn please ask for our website details.
Description outside property: Dine "al fresco" on the lovely balcony and watch the world go by.

Description of local area and activities: Get up early on Thursday morning to get the freshest fruit and veg from the weekly market. The market also offers a variety of local fares as well as clothing, linen, and the famous beret which was invented in this area. There is a 1902 self-portratit of Picasso depicting the artist wearing a beret. The beret's origins are traced to the Basque region of Europe in the Pyrenees Mountains, the natural border between France and Spain. For more on the history of the beret and why this hat may have been a favorite of this Spanish artist who spent much of his career in France, see BERETS.com There are several bakeries and patisseries within mere seconds walk from Le Petit Bijou. To get the bread fresh out of the oven go early. The bakers are up before dawn daily creating the world famous baggettes and croissants. Crescent-shaped breads have been made since the Middle Ages. Croissants are made of a leavened variant of puff pastry by layering yeast dough with butter and rolling and folding a few times in succession, then rolling. Making croissants by hand requires skill and patience; a batch of croissants can take several days to complete. They are mouth wateringly delicious.

Notes: It is not by chance that, as early as 1856, a British soldiers' garrison chose the climate and environment of Salies de Béarn, to open the first golf course of Continental Europe there. The mild climate of Salies-de-Béarn enables you to play all year round in favorable conditions. The diversity of relief and landscapes allowed to develop a varied course. From the banks of the river to the centennial oaks, the course makes use of the natural terrain to create Scottish-style links.
