Morbihan

Morbihan lies on the south coast of Brittany and has around 800 km of rugged coastline, rivers, estuaries and many sandy beaches. Morbihan is a popular destination with many holiday homes to rent directly from the owners. The coastline offers some of the best views of Brittany and there are dozens of tiny islands dotted around the coastline, many of which can be accessed by boat and explored by cycle or on foot. This coast has endless dunes and sandy coves, varying from the quiet and secluded to the lively and more populated. There are many enchanting little fishing villages dotted around, all accessible from your self catering holiday villa rental.

Activities

This area has numerous water sports such as surfing, jet skiing, canoeing, water skiing on the inland lakes, cycling, walking angling, and go karting. There are many fine 18 hole golf courses such as, Vannes Golf Club, Lorient Golf Club and Aurey Golf Club, while Bieuzy Les Eaux Golf Club has an excellent 9 hole course. Rent a holiday home near a golf course and play to your hearts content.

Festivals

The Lorient Celtic Festival which brings the best musicians from Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall and many other Celtic regions to perform features classical, traditional, jazz and rock. This is a truly spectacular event with artists, dancers, actors all contributing. For great value self catering holiday homes in Morbihan, search through the wide choice of vacation rentals on Rent Property Direct and feel like a local. The Celtic Nations parade is the highlight of the Festival ending with an amazing firework display. Artichokes, lamb, poultry and pork dishes are also used to great effect to make mouth watering dishes. The Breton Crepe, both sweet and savoury is another well known speciality of all the departments of Brittany.

Towns

Vannes. This delightful medieval town is the major tourist spot in the South of Brittany. Here you will find beautiful old wooden houses and fortified gateways from another era. Rent a gite, villa rental, self catering holiday accommodation or apartment rental in or around this town to make the most of your holiday. This is where many types of architectural styles blend together in harmony, with examples of Romanesque, Italian Renaissance and Gothic to admire. You will notice how this eclectic mix works when viewing the beautiful St Pierre Cathedral. Vannes has an aquarium in the Parc du Golf which the whole family will enjoy, especially the Nile crocodile which was found in the sewers of Paris!

Carnac is famous for having the world’s largest concentration of prehistoric Megaliths and Dolmen sites made of granite rocks. To those who view them, these stones, which rise up from the moorlands are as mysterious and awe inspiring as ever. Carnac-Plage beach is considered to be among the most elegant in Brittany.

Quiberon has a wild and wonderful coast, was once an island and is linked to the mainland by a string of dunes. One side of the island is just perfect for those seeking tranquillity, whilst the other side offers a lively seaside resort with many attractions and activities.

Aurey is an ancient town with a beautiful little harbour and the enchanting fishing village of Etel. It is just perfect for bird watchers, with many species of rare birds to be seen on the marshes. Boat trips are also popular in this area, especially if you want to explore the islands on the Coast of Moribhan. You can also hire a motor boat or dingy here or be dropped off to either go hiking or cycling round the islands. There is a good selection of villa rentals and apartment rentals in and around Aurey.

Le Faouet. Take a drive out from you holiday rental villa to see the 16th century timber market halls and the beautiful medieval chapels, stopping off for a delicious crepe in one of the many typical Breton creparies along the road.

Hennebont is an old walled town which still has traces of 13-15 century ramparts and a gatehouse complete with drawbridge. There is also a skateboarding park here.

Lorient is a fishing port with numerous large yachting marinas in the bay. The annual Festival Interceltique attracts huge crowds every summer.
