Nerja

Nerja is a town situated 50km east of the city of Malaga on the Costa del Sol and in the region of Andalucia. Whether you are looking for an apartment rental or a villa rental in Nerja, you will be sure to find your dream holiday rental on Rent Property Direct. Nerja has several clean beaches set in charming coves beneath cliffs and has one of the best climates in Europe. The dramatic mountain scenery makes it a significant centre for walkers. The Sierra de Burno overlooks the town and provides an imposing challenge to climbers.

Nerja is also the centre of scuba diving on the Costa del Sol. Once a sleepy little fishing village Nerja now has a population of over 12.000. There are 16km of fine beaches and sparkling clean water.

The old quarter of the town is virtually unchanged with narrow winding streets and whitewashed houses with wrought iron terraces overflowing with geraniums. Step out of your holiday rental and enjoy all that this beautiful destination has to offer right on your doorstep. Malaga Airport serves Nerja and is just a 45min drive away. You will find that the Nerja weekly market and supermarkets will provide you amply with all your fresh food and wines for your stay in one of our beautiful holiday rental villas.

Places of interest in Nerja

Balcony of Europe. This is the heart of Nerja, a spectacular palm tree lined promenade along the edge of a towering cliff which was once the site of the great Moorish castle. From here you will enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the sandy coves below. The backdrop of the hazy mountains is truly awesome and at night the place comes alive with street performers of all kinds with something to entertain everyone.

The Nerja Caves. Undoubtly Nerja’s most spectacular attraction these fascinating caves are located 3km from town and includes archaeological treasures such as paintings of over 20.000 years old and many pre-historic remains. One of the enormous natural caverns has been transformed into a concert hall where many concerts are performed during the summer months. Don’t miss the International Cave Festival which includes the participation of many top international entertainers.

Church of El Salvador is a 17th century building with a charming mixture of Baroque and Moorish or Mudejar.

Gardens of Capistrano Playa roll down to Burriana beach and it is well worth visiting these beautiful gardens.

Take a horse-drawn carriage and discover the most romantic corners of Nerja, stopping off at one of the many excellent restaurants and pavement cafes for refreshments, to soak up the sun and just watch the world go by. Explore Nerja’s beautiful scenery by taking a jeep tour or go on a walking excursion or guided mountain walk and enjoy the company of a group, stopping off for a picnic lunch together at some well chosen beauty spot.

Enjoy a great family day out by visiting the Pena Escrita Ecological Park or the Aqua Velez water park where there is something for everyone, children and adults alike.

Shopping. From your holiday rental why not have a day of fun retail therapy by taking a shopping trip to Il Ingenio where you will find many familiar high street shops such as Zara. You can opt to go further afield, but quite within reasonable driving distance from your holiday villa and have a great day out in Malaga.

Perhaps you will want to stay closer to home and enjoy a day of pure indulgence and pampering at the Nerja Spa and Health Club.

Nearby villages. From your holiday home, take a drive inland and explore the charming villages or drive along the coast, stopping off to relax or enjoy refreshments at one of the many lovely marinas along the way. The villages which are well worth visiting are Maro Village and the beautiful historic Frigliana Village where you can browse the many little craft shops and perhaps purchase some Frigliana wine to accompany a romantic evening meal on the terrace of your holiday rental villa. The Marina del Este, the Sierra Nevada and Competa are also well worth a visit.

Take a boat trip and do some dolphin spotting. This is always popular with children and adults alike, leaving a wonderful memory to take back home.

Activities

While the busiest beach is Burriano, the beaches of Carabeo, El Chorillo and Calahonda are equally lovely and more suited to those with young children. Every possible water sport is catered for along the beaches of Nerja, so water sport enthusiasts will be spoiled for choice and snorkelling trips and scuba diving are particularly popular. Then you have fishing, canoeing, horse riding, mountain walks, tennis, bowling, Nerja boules and petanque, skate boarding, beach volleyball or canyoning in the mountain regions.

Nightlife

Nerja’s nightlife is mainly to do with eating out and there are simply numerous restaurants to choose from. For something a little different you can take The Tapas Trail. This makes a great alternative to eating quietly among strangers in a restaurant, as you trail along the very best Tapas bars where you will discover the atmosphere of the real Spain hidden in Nerja’s wonderful back streets and enjoy the company of the locals, making it a cheap and fun evening out. This appeals to all ages but is particularly enjoyable for the teenagers in your group, who may sometimes tire of visiting the quieter restaurants.

For those who are seeking late nights and a vibrant atmosphere, walk from your holiday home to Antonio Millon and Plaza Tutti Frutti where you will find wall to wall bars and dancing until dawn.

Festivals and Carnivals

Nerja and the surrounding areas have many colourful and vibrant events throughout the year from fishing festivals to the religious themed colourful processions through the streets. There are flamenco dancing fiestas, musical and theatrical events and historical festivals where re-enactments are performed. Whatever your taste and whenever you visit there will always be some event taking place which you will enjoy just a short walk from your holiday letting in this romantic corner of beautiful Andalucia.

Cuisine

Nerja’s cuisine includes several specialities such as De la Donacella which is a mouth-watering fish dish using red mullet, and many other delicious fish and seafood dishes. There is an impressive choice from the many typical Andalucian dishes using Serrano ham, Manchego cheese, olives, chorizo, tortilla and of course Paella. International cuisine to the ubiquitous sausage egg and chips are also included on most menus around the town. Rioja wine is the popular accompaniment to Andalucian food, but there are many other excellent choices from the best wine making regions of Spain and neighbouring countries. Rent a local villa rental and visit The Food and Wine Festival which is hugely popular in the town and draws huge crowds from far and near.
