Rental Description

Welcome to Sago Cottage, a charming home nestled into the hillside above Coral Bay on St. John, Virgin Islands. Though recently built, Sago Cottage is a traditional west Indian structure - open and airy with brightly painted shutters and covered decks overlooking a gorgeous view. From its intimate and tasteful furnishings to its private hot tub under the stars, it is the perfect spot for a romantic holiday for two. The details and amenities are designed to give our guests an experience of the West Indies of a bygone era. With the cooling breezes and the captivating view you may never want to leave this idyllic hideaway.

The covered porches were designed and furnished with comfort in mind. They hold a small dining table, reading chairs and a porch swing to while away the rare rainy afternoon. A coconut shell bird feeder attracts a delightful group of finches in the mornings. The view to the south and east is of the eastern end of St. John, the neighboring British Islands and the Caribbean Sea. This peaceful spot has unforgettable sun rises as well as moon rises.

The cozy interior of Sago Cottage has a distinctly quaint feel without sacrificing modern conveniences. There is a fully equipped kitchen, a full size dining room and a small but comfortable living room. The bedroom features a queen sized four poster mahogany bed, hand made on St. John, and is a perfect place to wake up to a day in the islands. The colorful louvered shutters serve to filter the light as well as frame the ocean views throughout the cottage.

"Get Away from it all at Sago Cottage" by Happy birthday planner
Date of Stay: 4/10/16

"This was a great getaway week for my husband and me-we went for our birthdays! The cottage location is fabulous, with great views, privacy, and leaves you feeling removed from the rest of the world. Yet all the comforts of home are provided - well stocked kitchen, hot tub, nice towels & linens. As much as I loved the view from the front deck, the view upon waking up to the sun coming in the windows and looking out over the islands was even better! Groceries on the island are pricey, but the staff of Sago took us to the grocery store upon arrival and gave us advice on nice places to eat. Snorkeling was great every beach we visited. This is a great place to visit for active, laid back people who like to explore and aren't into staying at glitzy hotel type places. Boating is great here, too. Not a good island for biking as roads are curvy, hilly, and have tight bends to get around."

Date of Stay: 4/3/16

"We had a wonderful time at Sago cottage. It is so charming and comfortable and stocked with everything we needed, including beach and snorkeling equipment which were invaluable. Our favorite spot was sitting in the comfortable adirondack chairs on the deck and looking at that amazing view of the islands. And added to the beautiful view is the lush foilage surrounding the cottage which enhanced our enjoyment and was home to a variety of birds. We especially enjoyed feeding sugar to the pretty little bananaquits which were frequent visitors. As much as we enjoyed all the activities of the day, i.e. swimming, snorkeling and hiking, we always looked forward to returning to "our" chairs on the deck and enjoying the view. The service of the Calabash staff cannot be beat and they were so prompt with any questions we had. I could not imagine a better staff and a more lovely spot for our first trip to St. John."

"Old School Caribbean" by anselmo18
Date of Stay: 3/20/16

"If you are nostalgic for the sleepy, rural, slightly down-at-the-heels (though not cheap) Caribbean, where goats and donkeys claim the right of way on narrow, impossibly steep roads, then Sago Cottage is for you. The view from the deck alone makes the bone jarring drive worthwhile. The colorful cottage, relatively new but still reminiscent of the old time West Indies, is basically one compact space divided into a kitchenette, living-dining area and sleeping alcove. It is ideal for two people who do not require a villa or beachfront accommodations and don't mind waking up to the gentle scratching of a hungry cat named Tigger on the screen door. You can read elsewhere about the activities St. John has to offer, sailing, snorkeling, hiking, kayaking or just laying about on the glorious north shore beaches-uncrowded after the cruise ship passengers have departed for the day. What I remember most are dinner at Miss Lucy's, shopping for fresh produce at Josephine's Organic Gardens, Colombo's spiked smoothies and the lilting music of Sassafras at the Indigo Grill. If you do go, you might want to check on the status of a potentially transformative marina development project proposed for Coral Bay. The Zika bearing aedes mosquito is something else to keep in mind. We were there in a comparatively dry season and didn't see or hear any mosquitoes."

"My husband and I had such an awesome time at Sago cottage. It was exactly what we were looking for in a romantic, fun filled honeymoon. The house was beautiful and very well maintained. I would love to come back some day to stay at Sago in Coral Bay!"

"The whole experience at Sago has been wonderful. The transfers from St. Thomas to the ferry to the lady who met us at the dock and then took us shopping and then to our place was great. Very helpful and friendly. The house is amazing. The views are first rate. The outdoor shower and hot tub is really neat. The deer that walk around in the late afternoon is delightful. The road up is bumpy is if that is not your thing, I understand. deck overlooking the bay is first rate. Great kitchen, comfy bed and clean bathroom. I would recommend this place."

"Perfect Island Cottage for Romantic Engagement Week" by Repeat Offenders
Date of Stay 10/25/15

"This was our second time staying at Sago and it will always be very special to us. During our most recent trip I proposed to my now fiancee and we had a perfect week! Our travel to St. John was a mess but a simple call to Susan and her staff was enough to make sure that the ride from the airport, ferry, rental car, and lodging were all still perfectly arranged for a smooth first night on the island. What could have been a horrible start to our vacation was made very simple thanks to Susan, Warren G Taxi, Diane, Margaret and the whole team at Calabash.
Sago offers a beautiful view of the east end of St. John, Norman Island, Coral Bay, and the Hurricane Hole. The cottage is uniquely positioned close to the Salt Pond trails and snorkeling areas as well as north shore road and Anaberg ruins. Grocery shopping should be done at the starfish market when you arrive but you can always visit Louis at the Love City Market in Coral Bay or the Calabash Market. We particularly enjoyed spending time at Skinny Legs and snorkeling Waterlemon Bay. Aqua Bistro is an excellent restaurant with an outstanding bar. The Ram's Head Trail is also close by and is a hot but rewarding hike. In past trips we also enjoyed the morning yoga at Concordia but unfortunately this was closed during our most recent visit. Apparently many things open in mid-November for the "season".
If planning to stay at Sago, make sure to reserve a vehicle with 4WD. This is a MUST and also opens up the island for exploring. I personally love driving on the island but have to remember to KEEP LEFT! The road up to the cottage from salt pond road is very steep and the turns into dirt/gravel. There are two paved switch-backs before you get to the cottage and it helps to switch out of 4WD to make these turns (and go easy on your vehicle's transmission). I have never had trouble on the roads, even in moderate rain, just go slow and make sure to utilize your 4WD!
The sunrise from this cottage is breathtaking! When clear at nighttime (usually a few hours after sunset), it is nice to enjoy the night sky from the spa (while also avoiding mosquitos and no see ums). I would recommend utilizing the mosquito repellant incense or candles while in the spa or outdoor shower. The indoor fans and mosquito netting help prevent these pests while inside and sleeping. Be prepared for morning visits from "sneezy" the friendly island cat and local donkeys."

"Secluded, romantic, gorgeous... perfect!" by Jessica B
Date of Stay: 7/5/15

"We came to St. John for our honeymoon and were trying to decide between a resort or a cottage like this. I'm so glad we chose Sago Cottage! It's just as beautiful as the photos you saw (if not more) and Susan and her staff made everything stress-free, especially the dreaded part of arriving after a red-eye flight and getting to the rental car company. There is a friendly cat who stays on the porch and you will see all sorts of animals outside the cottage and around the island (donkeys, goats, iguanas, hermit crabs, etc.). The views are to die for, especially the sunrises. We had fun exploring the island and doing adventurous activities, but our last day was devoted to hanging out on the deck, absorbing the beauty of the islands and reading. The perfect end to a perfect honeymoon!"

"Ságo, your own paradise!" by Michael S
Date of Stay: 3/15/15

"From the moment we stepped off the boat Susan's staff was there to meet us. After renting a car another staff member met us in coral bay and showed us to the house and all its amenities. The house was perfect. The view is breathtaking at any time of day or night. It was spotlessly clean and fully decked out for maximum island enjoyment. The beach chairs, coolers, and snorkel gear were all clean and of top notch quality. We loved the hot tub! Clean filtered water, a great outdoor shower, and the wonderful decor all aided in getting us into the island vibe. Coral bay is so removed and quiet. We often felt like we had the whole island to ourselves. I can not recommend Susan and her staff more. They were all great. If planning a Caribbean vacation, you can't do better than ságo cottage and calabash rentals. Just perfect."

"Incredible on every level!" by carriebleu
Date of Stay: 3/8/15

"We had an amazing time on St. John and particularly Sago cottage. Susan, Diane and Margaret really did "think of everything" as it related to our stay. From the first communication asking about the place to the booking and the actual trip, the customer service and execution was top notch! It's a BIG DEAL to have everything go right on vacation and they never missed a beat....From the moment we stepped off the plane, our driver was right there waiting for us. Take their suggestion to get a private taxi. It makes things SO much easier and your stay starts off on the right foot!. After the taxi dropped us off at the ferry we had a short ride to Cruz Bay where Brian our greeter was waiting. He was great. Took us to get our rental Jeep and also took us to the grocery to pick up a few things. ( Great idea by the way! ) Brian had us follow him to the cottage and when we got there gave us a great overview of everything at the cottage and tips to make our stay better. He was great.
THE COTTAGE:
WOW!!!! That view is even more amazing than the pictures show. It's truly a MAGICAL place and I don't say that lightly. We have stayed at some pretty incredible places. The thing about Sago is it in it's effortless ease and beauty. It's no more or no less than you need. The simplicity of the place make the beauty of St. John and Coral Bay shine through. The porch is a wonderful place to read, have a glass of wine and chill. We did that a lot!
Everything you need has been thought about. The kitchen is fully furnished. There is great quality snorkel gear, coolers ( 2 sizes ) umbrellas, chairs, beach towels etc..You don't even need ice as there is a large cool pack in freezer! Plenty of guide books, restaurant menus, day trip suggestions and the office is very helpful to give you suggestions for things to do or just to point you in the right direction. There is also WIFI if you need it and it works well.
Really can't say enough about the cottage. It's such a wonderful place. Of course this is not for everyone. If you want a formal, Cruz Bay style villa or tons of unneeded space, this is not the place for you. This place is for people who love REAL St. John... the beauty, the simplicity and the charm of being really engaged to place you stay and who can enjoy the simple, yet beautiful life. If you are that person, GO TO SAGO!! You will love it."

"this place is magical! we had a wonderful time...the views are awesome, very private, peaceful, quiet (except for the frogs croaking and birds chirping, which made it even more magical!!) i'll have a difficult time coming back to St. John and staying anywhere else!

"Absolutely perfect" by Shaina B
Date of Stay: 12/7/14

"We were very pleased with our stay at Sago Cottage. The house was beautiful and had all the amenities of home. We really had no complaints. Even though there were no glass windows or AC the trade winds keep the house cool most of the day. The view is simply amazing the pictures (though beautiful) don't do it justice. We took the advice to Keep all food in the fridge so ants don't come in and didn't have any problems. The sunrises are worth the early rise. So don't miss them! Susan and her office staff make your trip smooth sailing if you take their advise. They arranged transportation to and from St. Thomas and set up our rental car on St. John. The whole vacation went off without a hitch. Don't be scared of the hill to the cottage, it gets easier everytime! We WILL be staying there again. What an amazing experience."

"Michael and Marjorie" by Mike

"We just returned from our stay at Sago Cottage. Everything we can say about this wonderful Cottage has been said and noted in the reviews. If you are looking for a memorable, beautiful, romantic lifetime experience, you will find it at Sago Cottage. We have been fortunate to have stayed at a number of beautiful places but this was special and exceeded our expectations. We will return. Susan has a great team and they will address any need you may have--FIRST CLASS."

"Amazing Honeymoon!!" by Kim and Lee
Date of Stay: 9/28/14

"We had the most amazing honeymoon here at Sago Cottage. We were pleasantly greeted by Susan when we arrived and were shown around the cottage, which had it all. The view is absolutely breathtaking. We try to show pictures and explain how amazing it is but there is no putting it into words. It does take ~4 minutes to get up from the main road but for us it was fun driving on the bumpy road. The cottage was very clean and well taken care of! We loved how there were only screens in the windows to allow the fresh air to come through. According to the locals, we were there during the warmest and most humid time and it wasn't an issue not having AC. Sago had snorkeling gear, beach chairs, beach towels, coolers, and everything else we needed. We didn't do much cooking only because it was our honeymoon, but the kitchen was fully equipped if we had chosen to do so. There was even a grill on the deck. We also loved the outdoor rock shower and hot tub. FYI - you can't use your cell phone but the wifi allowed us to email and iMessage who we needed to throughout the week and the cottage phone made local calls.
Susan also had great recommendations on what we could do while on the island. Bryan, who works as a greeter for Calabash Cottages, takes people out on a lap around St. John on Wednesdays on his catamaran named Busy Bee. We loved snorkeling so we were very interested so Susan went out of her way to check on availability for us. We had an amazing time thanks to her info and his trip!
We couldn't have had a more relaxing honeymoon. We loved being on Coral Bay because we were still able to meet locals and other travelers but it was more low key with a better view and breeze. We didn't mind driving to Cruz Bay either when we did choose to go over there. We appreciated all the help from Susan and the rest of her team and the calls throughout the week to see if we needed anything! We cannot wait to make a trip back and stay with you again."

"Great cottage and an awesome vacation" by Chad and Gina

"My wife and I spent our 20th anniversary in the Sago Cottage. Susan and her team was great to work with and helped arrange every detail. The cottage is very well equipped with everything we needed to make our stay fantastic. The views from every room, the deck, the hot tub, and the shower are breathtaking. Thank you for a great stay, we can't wait to go back!"

"The Perfect Vacation Spot" by Terry K
Date of Stay: 2/23/14

"Sago Cottage is a perfect get away location in Coral Bay on St. John. My husband and I have been lucky enough to stay in this cottage four separate vacations. The cottage is clean, comfortable and private. It is conveniently located near some wonderful restaurants and great snorkeling locations. Customer service is exemplary - you are greeted and driven to the location and receive a call during the week to ensure all is well. We look forward to spending time at Sago Cottage for many years into the future."

"Truly Magical!" by Kathie and Ed H
Date of Stay 11/3/13

"Sago is truly a magical place, with one of the most spectacular views in all of the Caribbean. Susan, the owner, sure know how to create an idyllic and romantic setting for honeymooners as well as couples who want to spend a week in paradise. It was a joy working Diane is her very friendly and capable assistant who skillfully attends to all details to make your visit run smoothly. Sago Cottage is located up a steep winding hillside and nestled among lush vegetation. It is a one-bedroom affair with an open plan, high ceilings with fans to keep you cool, a wrap around porch and an outside spa and shower. The interior as well as exterior has tropical blue and green painted shutters, adding to its unique charm. It has every amenity one could need in the tropics. The kitchen is well appointed, and we made good use of it for breakfasts and most dinners. Lunches were spent at the various wonderful local restaurants on our way to or from one of the islands amazing beaches. Evenings were spent soaking in the spa and watching the stars (of full moon, if you're lucky). The outdoor shower has a view to die for, overlooking various islands in the distance that are incredibly dramatic with the changing light. We have visited many islands and stayed at many places, and we can say, unequivocally, that Sago is one of the most special places the Caribbean has to offer. This was our third time but it definitely not our last!"

"Our Own Piece of Paradise" by Mary G.
Date of Stay: 4/21/13

"We stayed at Sago Cottage for our honeymoon, and could not have had a better experience!! The cottage was as charming, if not more so, than it appears online, and the view was phenomenal! The owners made getting to Sago Cottage super easy by meeting us at the ferry, arranging for our rental car and helping us get it picked up, taking us to the grocery store and waiting while we shopped, and then leading the way directly to the cottage to help us get settled in. The road up to Sago Cottage is a trip in itself, and worth the experience to stay a little off the beaten path! We enjoyed cooking at the cottage and eating out on the balcony...best dinner view on the whole island! We were awaken in the early hours one morning to the sound of foot steps coming up the gravel drive, which immediately freaked me out. We got up to investigate, only to find a donkey laying the drive! He spent the rest of the night sleeping in our drive and then departed as the sun was coming up with a joyful breying!! Sago Cottage was a one of a kind experience, and we hope to return some day!"

"Lovely, just lovely!" by Jim and Andrea TN
Date of Stay: 4/14/13

"Once again, I want to thank Susan for a wonderful trip to St. John. We stayed in astral Cottage last year and Sago Cottage this year. Both trips were just what we needed. Astral Cottage is beautiful. Sago cottage was perfect for us. The house had everything we needed and we really enjoyed the hot tub with the cool breezes as we watched exceptional sunrises! What can I say, a week of snorkeling (Waterlemon Cay), wonderful food (Asolare), walks with ruins (Peace Hill), shopping (Mongoose Junction), and a perfect cottage to return home to each evening. All at Calabash Cottages also helped our trips run smoothly with assistance on transfers and jeep rentals. Thanks! We loved everything about astral and Sago Cottages and we plan to return next year for 2 weeks!"

"Best views and location!" by Julie and Larry, CT
Date of Stay: 3/31/13

"My husband and I just spent our 30th anniversary at Sago cottage, and had a fabulous time. The cottage and the views are exactly as shown in the photos. We loved the privacy and quiet of this special place. We found the beaches, snorkeling, and hiking to be the best within a short drive from the cottage on this side of the island. We only went back to Cruz Bay for gas (and the hike to the closest beach there, Solomon Bay, was a let down compared to those closer to "home"). We would highly recommend this cottage for a truly relaxing getaway."

"THE BEST!!!" by Andrea W.
Date of Stay: 1/13/13

"The folks at Calabash Cottages, which manages Sago Cottage, made our trip to St. John perfect! They are so efficient and friendly that we had absolutely no glitches or stress! From the moment we contacted them to reserve the week at Sago, they provided all necessary information and assistance--private transportation from the St. Thomas Airport (and return) and rental car. We had stayed at one of the other Calabash properties a few years ago so we knew what to expect. A well-equipped cottage with all the conveniences, a spectacular view, and any needed help while on the island. We have rented other vacation properties in the US and foreign countries, and I can easily say that Susan Brierley and her staff are THE BEST managers anywhere! We can't wait to return to Sago or one of Calabash's other properties!"

"Just what we wanted for a romantic getaway!" By christine h.
Date of Stay: 12/30/12

"My husband and I wanted to get away and relax on St. John so the place we stayed was very important to us. We wanted secluded and quiet with excellent views. Sago Cottage was absolutely perfect and we would definitely consider staying there again. The porch was fantastic (our favorite part) and the accommodations provided everything we needed and wanted.
We were also pleasantly surprised at how well we were cared for by Susan and her staff. We were taken care of from the moment we arrived on St. Thomas, given excellent recommendations by her staff, and provided with snorkel gear, beach chairs, and everything we needed to enjoy the island.
I highly recommend Sago Cottage!"

"Perfect Honeymoon!" by Katherine D.
Date of Stay: 11/5/12

"Sago Cottage is everything we hoped for and more for our honeymoon! If you are like us and do not like resorts and big crowds, this cottage is perfect. Not only is the house set up on a hill with tons of privacy and no neighbors, it is in a great location in Coral Bay, which is a laid back and slow paced part of the island with lots of character and great local spots! While you do have to have a Jeep if you stay here, that was one of our favorite parts was driving around! Just down the hill are some of the best restarurants in Coral Bay so you don't need to drive far if you don't want to. The cottage itself looks exactly like the pictures shown, I thought it was too good to be true! The cottage is clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed. There is no A.C. however the fans and breeze felt perfect and we were never uncomfortable. Some other reviews mentioned a problem with bugs, however we were lucky in that we did not have too many. Yes, there were occasional intruders and a few ants in the kitchen by the end of the week, but nothing that a quick wipe down couldn't fix! As long as all your food is kept in the refrigerator there is no problem! The hot tub was amazing and the view around the whole cottage is breathtaking. We were supplied with ample towels, two coolers, two beach chairs, and snorkel gear. The shower is outside and makes you truely feel like you are living the island life with the hummingbirds right above you every morning. The staff at Sago Cottage could not have been more wonderful. We were greeted by Jen at the ferry who drove us to pick up our jeep, stopped by the grocery store with us, then lead us to the cottage and went over our maps. We later booked a Kayak tour with her as well! Our second day we called the office because our snorkel gear did not fit and we were greeted at the bottom of the hill within the hour by Dianne with new gear. The whole process was smooth and enjoyable from the moment we arrived until we left! We have wonderful memories of our time at Sago cottage and would recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful escape!"

"Everything we expected!" by Russell W.
Date of Stay: 6/3/12

"My wife and I stayed in a similar cottage on Kauai, and Sago Cottage was equally delightful. The short drive on the bumpy road was no problem, and the privacy of the cottage was well worth it. The trees and flowers surrounding the cottage make a beautiful setting, and the view of the bay is stunning. We awoke each morning to the sunrise over the east end, made coffee, put water in the bird bath and watched the birds line up to play in it. The outdoor shower on the back side of the cottage provided natural privacy and beauty; regardless of morning or evening. The cottage fearture were just as described: very comfortable bed/linens/towels, complete kitchen accomodations, and balcony features. Being quite high up the hill, the breeze through the cottage made the temperature just perfect (and my wife has a very narrow comfort range). If we're able to return to St John in the future, we would definitely stay at Sago Cottage again."

Location Description

Ságo Cottage is located in a secluded hillside setting with a great deal of privacy and no nearby neighbors. The last three quarters of a mile are via bumpy dirt road but the view when you arrive will be well worth the drive. Lovely white sand beaches, including Salt Pond Bay, are just a short drive as are national park hiking trails. Restaurants, shops and watersports are all available within two miles in Coral Bay. The main town on the island, Cruz Bay, is located 8 miles away. The airport is in St. Thomas which is reached via a twenty minute ferry ride (Ferries leave every hour on the hour and cost $7 each way).

Payment Details/Description

All payments are by check or money order. Special arrangements can be made for guests located outside of the US. Once you decide to reserve with us we will hold you reservation while you send your check for 50% of the total. That should be sent as soon as you reserve.

Your balance is due 30 days before you arrive. If your reservation is made less than thirty days before arrival the entire payment is due. Once we reserve a week for you there is a mutual agreement between us. That means that we will no longer offering it to other guests. Because rental houses do not get walk in guests like hotels do we cannot make refunds for any reason unless we are able to find another guest to fill the same house for the same week. When we are able to fill a cancellation (which we can usually do if given enough notice) we do not charge a service fee or cancellation fee. If this is a concern we strongly suggest the purchase of trip cancellation insurance.

Our rates do not include local hotel tax of 12.5% but you will find no surprise fees. We do not charge a reservation fee, a service fee, a cleaning fee or a damage deposit. We treat our guests with respect and find that they return the favor by leaving our home in good condition. We accept normal wear and tear as inevitable.

Travel Details

Our guests arrive via the St. Thomas airport (STT). They will then need to take a taxi van (shared) from the airport to the ferry unless they make other arrangements. Most of our guests use a private transportation system that will take them directly to the airport without interim stops on St. Thomas. We can assist with these arrangements. The trip from the St. Thomas airport to the Redhook ferry dock takes about 50 minutes.

Ferries from the Redhook dock leave every hour on the hour and take 20 minutes. The charge is $7 per person plus $4 per piece of baggage not including carry on.

We can make your car rental arrangements and get you a 10 percent discount if your reservation is made in advance. The car rental company that we use, Courtesy Car Rental, is a small company. If they are booked we may not be able to get you a discount but we can still help with make your arrangements.

For guests who are unfamiliar with the island we are happy to meet your ferry. If you have visited the island recently and are comfortable finding your way to Coral Bay we will arrange for the car rental company to wait for you at the ferry and send you to our meeting point in Coral Bay. In either case we will lead you out to the cottage, give you an orientation and answer any questions about your visit. We do everything we can to make your arrival as smooth as possible and give special attention to guests who experience flight delays.
