Puerto de la Duquesa

Puerto de la Duquesa is situated in between Malaga and Gibraltar, right in the heart of the Costa del Sol looking out to the Mediterranean. It is served by Malaga airport 40mins and Gibraltar 30mins. Puerto de la Puerto is close to the vibrant towns of Marbella and Estepona allowing you the peacefulness of the town but also making the more lively areas easily accessible. Whatever your budget there is a large choice of self catering holiday accommodation in and around Puerto de la Duquesa. The area retains a huge amount of unspoilt natural scenery and authentic local character which makes it rather special, yet still sharing the wonderful climate, infrastructure and amenities of the rest of the Costa del Sol.

Places of interest

Sabinillas is 1 km from Puerto de la Duquesa. It is a lovely sleepy little market town with a wonderful sandy beach, a street market every Friday and a massive car boot sale every Sunday. Most of the village life revolves around the square where you will find the village church and a typical Spanish Atmosphere. It makes for a really pleasant evening stroll from your vacation rental villa in Puerto de la Duquesa.

Estepona is a short distance from Puerto de la Duquesa and has retained its old world Spanish character and charm. It has a vibrant and lively atmosphere and a huge number of excellent restaurants serving the best of Spain’s culinary delights. There are many areas of historical and archaeological interest to visit here such as the Castillo del Nicio situated on a hilltop called Cerro del Castor. There are extensive ruins from the Moorish and Christian periods to be explored between the deep valleys.

La Rada Beach has a lovely promenade with restaurants serving a delectable array of both traditional and international dishes. If you like museums, Estepona has five small museums dedicated to its history and agriculture. Browse round the market which sells many leather goods, arts and crafts. There are different musical and other festival events every weekend and these are very lively and fun filled occasions for all the family to enjoy on holiday.

For the golf enthusiast, this area is undoubtedly a piece of golf paradise. You need only to step outside your holiday letting to experience the La Duquesa Golf and Country Club, which boasts an 18 holes course designed by Robert Trent Jones with a majestic setting of sea and mountain views. The club caters well to the non golfers in the group by providing tennis, squash and a fully equipped gym, after which you can relax around the swimming pool at your holiday rental.

Other excellent golf courses include the Alcaidesa Golf Club overlooking the Rock of Gibraltar. Ten minutes from Puerto you have Sotogrande Golf Club, Valderrama Golf Course, host of the Ryder Cup and World Championship, La Cañada Golf Club, a wonderful golf challenge, and San Roque Golf Course a few minutes away. In addition there are 40 other courses within an hour’s drive, making this a great area to rent a villa or apartment on a golfing holiday.

Cuisine

All along the coast you will find that mouth watering fresh fish dishes is the order of the day. Sample freshly caught sardines cooked over a charcoal fire, or a platter of fritura, a selection of fresh grilled fish; totally delicious, accompanied by a light crispy temptingly dressed salad or many other accompaniments. There is a huge diversity of first class restaurants to be found with easy access from your holiday home in Puerto de la Douse, apart from the atmospheric area on the waterfront, which is just a short stroll away.

The famous Andalucia Tapas bar reigns supreme, where as many as 40 different dishes are on offer. This region has an impressive supply of high quality vegetables, fruit, the world famous Serrano hams, oils and wine with its Moorish origins very evident in the cuisine. As is typical Mediterranean there is much use of olive oil, garlic, tomatoes and peppers, which are used in a variety of ways, not least in the preparation of a variety of scrumptious salads. Pork is more popular inland, but many delectable pork dishes are also served in the coastal restaurants.

Although Paella has its origins in Valencia it is also features on the menus in this area. Lamb and chicken dishes are served in a variety of ways to tempt even the most discerning of palettes. There are plenty of alternatives for vegetarians, with delicious rice dishes, salads soups and omelettes.

Deserts tend to have an Arab influence and are richly flavoured with aniseed, cinnamon honey and sesame. Fresh biscuits, cakes and bread come in a variety of truly delicious flavours and are all available a step outside your holiday rental at the nearby supermarkets, as are a huge choice of other fresh produce. This is the perfect location for you to sit back, relax and watch the sun go down on a warm balmy evening while you enjoy a cold beer or a glass of Jerez sherry before trying the delicious local cuisine. Many local restaurants offer tasters with bread followed by a set menu, which includes an Andalucia house wine of either red white or rose at very affordable prices. A popular lunchtime favourite is to head to the beach for a Paella or fresh fish platter washed down with a good local wine before retiring to the cool ambience of your villa rental for a peaceful siesta in the shade of the terrace or air conditioned rooms.
