Var The Var, takes its name from the Var River which used to flow along its eastern boundary, is a department of Provence, south of France. Over half of the Var is covered with forest and the department is in the foothills of the Alps. There are three main mountain ranges with the Lachens at 1,715 metres being the highest. The Var is known for the harbour of Toulon and for its seaside resorts, the most famous being Saint-Tropez. Discover many great value holiday homes in the Var by searching through the wide choice on Rent Property Direct and enjoy an unforgettable vacation in France. There are also some fine examples of Romanesque and mediaeval architecture, such as the Frejus Cathedral and Le Thoronet Abbey which is one of the best preserved medieval Cistercian monasteries in France. Take a drive out from your holiday rental villa to one of the pretty hilltop villages, too numerous to mention here and enjoy a stroll through medieval winding streets, before having a leisurely break in one of the many excellent hill top restaurants and cafes. Activities This region is perfectly suited to the usual water sports such as; swimming, sailing, windsurfing and many more. The ski resorts of Chamonix and Annecy are easily accessible from your holiday rental in the Var. The landscape suitably lends itself to walking, cycling, fishing and hunting. The region is adorned with many excellent golf courses, in particular the Golf de Beauvallon at Grimaud, Golf de Valcros between San-Tropez and Toulon and Golf de Roquebrune which has a spectacular view over the bay of Frejus, to name but a few. Stay in a golf holiday accommodation, apartment rental or self catering holiday villa either on or very near a golf course and enjoy these golf clubs every day of the holiday. Cuisine As you would imagine, this region has a wealth of varied fish dishes using enticingly fresh red mullet, juicy mussels, octopus and of course sardines in an array of delicious recipes. From the inland forests comes the region’s mushrooms and highly prized black truffle. This region’s most popular dish has to be Soup au Pistou. Maybe try some of these dishes at your holiday home. Towns Frejus is an elegant town of architectural, artistic and historical interest. Here you will find one of the oldest Roman Amphitheatres of Gaul. Whether you are looking for a villa rental, holiday let, vacation home or gite, you will find an abundance of choice in this area around Frejus. The archaeological museum houses the marble bust of Hermes, a century mosaic, the beautiful Bishop’s Palace built from pink limestone.
